Some patients who do not need to be hospitalized or have been discharged also need nursing services, such as health guidance, chronic disease management and psychological support, which need to be provided by professionally trained nurses. As one of the first batch of hospitals with nursing specialties, PUMCH, as early as 1999, established a peritoneal dialysis center clinic where the doctors and nurses consult with patients together. In recent years, PUMCH has gradually opened 14 specialized nursing clinics such as the one for AIDS patients. The nursing clinics help extend medical services from the hospital to patients’ home and community and provide professional nursing services for the public 24 hours a day offline and online, further meeting the diverse and multi-level health needs of the people.
Given that patients’ conditions can change rapidly and that clinical tests and diagnosis and treatment techniques are increasingly complex, specialized nursing clinics are under great pressure and have to deal with many emergencies, which requires nurses to make sound decisions fast in clinical settings. “Nurses qualified for specialized clinics are all nursing experts in their own field,” said Guo Na, Director of the Department of Nursing, “specialized nursing clinics can solve many practical problems for patients, and their nurses are very professional and meticulous, and are highly recognized by doctors working with them.”
At present, the specialized nursing clinics of PUMCH record nearly 40,000 patient visits per year, and the Internet specialized nursing consultations record more than 40,000 consultations with patients per year. More and more nursing talents have become specialists in the clinics. The specialized nursing clinics provide standardized and continuous post-discharge follow-up management and nursing support, which effectively helps patients develop healthful habits and significantly improves treatment compliance.
