The Study Results from First Chinese Multi-Center Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial of Cervical Cancer Screening in Large Population Were Released

(Correspondent: Dai Yi, Reporter: Wang Jing) Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) issued a report of the first Chinese multi-center randomized controlled clinical trial of cervical cancer screening in large population on January 10th, 2021. The trial was led by Professor Lang Jinghe, an academician from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of PUMCH, and co-chaired by Professor Qiao Youlin from Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Song Li, deputy director of the Department of Maternal and Child Health, National Health Commission, and Academician Wang Chen, president of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College were invited to attend the press conference issuing the report. Wu Peixin, the vice president of PUMCH was also present at the conference. Professor Zhu Lan, director of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of PUMCH, hosted the press conference.

The trial enrolled 60,732 Chinese women and lasted three years. The results of the trial shows that in China, the testing for high-risk human papillomavirus is an effective and cost-effective primary screening modality for cervical cancer. Under the current service ability of urban and rural primary health care system, this screening modality is the best way to meet the huge demands for screening of cervical cancer in China. The study results provided sufficient scientific foundation for the efforts to eliminating cervical cancer in China. This prospective research was co-chaired by Academician Lang Jinghe from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of PUMCH, and Professor Qiao Youlin from Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Nationally forty-one Class A tertiary hospitals and maternal and child health care hospitals at county level participated this research. The work was published online December 30th, 2020 in JAMA Oncology.
