On August 31, 2023, PUMCH held a pre-departure meeting for the first batch of professional and technical personnel assigned to the Macao Medical Center project. Honorary President Zhao Yupei and President Zhang Shuyang attended the meeting, chaired by Vice President Wu Wenming. The personnel going to Macao will make every effort to strive for the trial operation of the PUMCH Macao Medical Center by the end of the year, contributing PUMCH’s share to the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” in the medical field.

Since October 2020, the PUMCH Macao Medical Center project has been proceeding steadily with important milestones achieved. In December 2021, Ma Xiaowei, Minister of the National Health Commission, signed with the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao a memorandum of understanding on building the Islands District Medical Complex. In August 2022, the Macao SAR Government approved the establishment of the Strategic Development Committee of PUMCH Macao Medical Center/ Macao Hospital, with PUMCH Honorary President Zhao Yupei serving as the President. In February 2023, President Zhang Shuyang and the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR signed the “Cooperation Agreement between the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR and Peking Union Medical College Hospital”. In August 2023, the Macao SAR Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a bill regarding the management of the Islands District Medical Complex – Macao Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, further reinforcing the legal safeguard for the operation of the medical center.

To ensure that the PUMCH Macao Medical Center would be ready for trial operation by the end of 2023, PUMCH, in November 2022, dispatched a task force consisting of 5 management backbone members led by Vice President Wu Wenming to work in Macao. The hospital will soon assign backbone personnel from various departments in batches to Macao as well. Always conscious of their mission to serve people with compassionate medical care, PUMCHers actively volunteered to go to Macao. The first batch of 6 professional and technical personnel, namely Liu Xia and Li Wenbo from the Department of Radiotherapy, Li Ji from the Department of Gastroenterology, Hua Xiaoxue from the Department of Emergency, Feng Xiumin from International Medical Services, and Cui Yuanyuan from the Department of Finance, will soon leave for Macao.

President Zhang Shuyang stated in her speech that the task force had laid a solid foundation and hoped that the new arrivals would boldly explore and innovate, contributing and playing their due, exemplary role as young PUMCHers. She also proposed that the Macao project be developed as the innovation base for cultivating high-quality talents for the new era, or, in her words, cradle of the “New Hundred Talents” for the next centenary of the hospital. President Zhang also kindly asked about the family of the personnel going to Macao.

As the President of the Strategic Development Committee of the Macao Hospital, Honorary President Zhao Yupei expressed his earnest expectations for the personnel going to Macao. He pointed out that the Macao Medical Center, the first major cooperation in healthcare between the Macao SAR government and China’s mainland, held groundbreaking significance. He hoped that everyone would carry forward PUMCH’s fine tradition of solidarity and work in a well-organized and disciplined way to make the major project in PUMCH’s new centenary a great success.

At the meeting, the dispatched personnel expressed their commitment to the assignment with a strong sense of responsibility and professionalism. They will dedicate themselves to the preparatory work. Inspired by the PUMCH spirit, they will surmount all difficulties and complete their tasks successfully.
