On January 8, 2019, the 2018 National Science and Technology Progress Award were unveiled at the Great Hall of the People. “Key technology, system and clinical application of DBS”, a cooperation between Neurosurgery, PUMCH, Tsinghua University and other institutions won the first prize, PUMCH being the third winning organization. “Key technology and application of pen-based human-computer interaction” a cooperation between Neurology, PUMCH and Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutions won the second prize, PUMCH being the fourth winning organization.

The DBS project, combining medical with engineering, is self-developed core technology that tackled a world clinical difficulty and started China’s DBS from scratch. Through innovations in design, technique, clinical plan and application paradigm, the DBS comprehensive technological system led the development of neuromodulation techniques. Associate Professor Guo Yi from our Neurosurgery participated for more than ten years in the clinical development and application of the project, by proposing and helping develop new type electrode fixers and improving DBS in clinical application.

The pen-based human-computer interaction project solved a series of difficulties including continuous recognition of hand-written Chinese characters, and realized interaction with hand written texts and graphs. It can be widely applied in education, sports and medical care. Professor Cui Liying and Professor Zhu Yicheng from our Neurology led the research in clinical diagnosis and nerve function assessment. They smartly designed the interaction process as a data collection tool for fine movement of upper limbs, and realized nerve function assessment in non-interference state. It has been applied in clinical research and provided technological support for nerve function monitoring based on daily life in future.
