On April 25, 2018, a four-people delegation led by Dr. Rajiv Shah, new president of the Rockefeller Foundation, visited PUMCH and was received by PUMCH President Zhao Yupei.

President Zhao welcomed the delegation. He recalled the Foundation’s contributions to China in the early 20th century, the greatest of them being the funding of Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) and the hospital (PUMCH), so the delegation’s visiting is in a sense coming home. Zhao congratulated Dr. Shah on becoming the Foundation’s president, and said that, ever since its establishment, the hospital has been taking as its lifeline healthcare quality and patient safety, which is fundamentally in line with the Foundation’s mission of “Promoting the well-being of humanity throughout the world”.

Dr. Shah became the Foundation’s president in 2017. Before that he had more than two decades’ experience in business, politics and charity, and was appointed in 2009 by President Obama as administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Dr. Shah said that his visit is a root-seeking one and he would like to listen to suggestions on how the Foundation will help with the medical reform and science development in China. He also expressed the hope of further cooperation with the hospital on practical programs promoting healthcare in China.
