Call for Global Talents — Apply for the 2025 Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas) of NSFC Based in PUMCH

Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) is a Class A tertiary general hospital committed to delivering state-of-the-art clinical care, innovative scientific research and rigorous medical education. It is well-reputed at home and abroad for its full range of disciplines, cutting-edge technologies, outstanding specialties and strong multi-disciplinary strength. The hospital is speeding up efforts to develop itself as a pilot hospital for high-quality development of public hospitals and a national medical center, and bent on establishing itself as a "core base" for basic research and cutting-edge technology innovation for severe, complex and rare diseases. The National Facility for Translational Medicine and the State Key Laboratory for Complex, Severe and Rare Diseases are now fully operational, dedicated to conducting basic research, applied research, and frontier technology research around intractable diseases, critical illnesses, and rare diseases, accelerating the translation of high-level research outcomes into clinical applications. The implementation of the National High-level Hospital Clinical Research Funding program and the release of the Pilot Program for Enhancing the Clinical Research and Translation Capability of High-level Hospitals by 11 national-level institutions have given new impetus to the innovation-driven development of the hospital.

The Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas) under the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) aims to attract and encourage outstanding young scholars (including non-Chinese foreign talents) with a good track record in areas of natural science and engineering technology, among others, to return (come) to China and pursue innovative research in directions of their own choosing. The fund seeks to help young science and technology talents to grow and thrive and nurture outstanding academic backbone talents with the potential to reach the cutting edge, contributing to China's ascent in science and technology.

We welcome overseas excellent talents to apply for the 2025 Excellent Young Scientists Fund based in PUMCH, to jointly promote medical technology innovation and translation, to paint together a blueprint for medical science and technology innovation, and to contribute to a Healthy China!

I. Preferred areas of research

(1) Talents in basic research, frontier technology research and translational medicine research focusing on the pathogenesis and life support technologies of intractable diseases, acute and critical medical conditions, and rare disorders. This includes but is not limited to the following professional fields: life sciences, biomedical engineering, medical big data and artificial intelligence, epidemiology and health statistics, structural biology (single-particle and in-situ structures), pharmacology and medicinal chemistry (natural products), experimental zoology, bioinformatics, and other medical research-related professional fields.

(2) Talents in various medical specialties or interdisciplinary talents who promote high-quality development of disciplines and enhance medical technology. This includes but is not limited to the following professional fields: internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, oncology, psychological medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and other medical specialties.

II. Benefits

In addition to the national funding, talents will receive from PUMCH the following benefits based on their level of expertise: generous annual salary, settling-in allowance, and research initiation grant; support for establishing research teams, and matching office and laboratory space.

Upon being granted the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas), talents will receive support from PUMCH for applications for tenure-track/tenured faculty positions in Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College. In the case of successful applications, they will be eligible to admit a designated number of doctoral candidates as doctoral supervisor and will be included in the institution's tenure-track faculty development system.

III. Application Criteria and Process

1. Criteria

(1) Abide by the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China, follow scientific ethics, and consciously practice the ethos of scientists in the new era;

(2) Born on or after January 1, 1985;

(3) A doctoral degree holder;

(4) Major research area being natural science and engineering technology, etc.;

(5) During the period after obtaining the doctoral degree and prior to April 15, 2025, the applicant should generally have obtained a formal teaching or research position in renowned overseas universities, scientific research institutions, or corporate R&D units, and have worked for no less than 36 consecutive months; the time limit can be relaxed as appropriate for those who obtained their doctoral degree overseas and have a particularly impressive track record (not applicable to those who obtained overseas doctoral degrees through international joint training programs).

For applicants who simultaneously hold paid positions in China during their overseas work period, the working years in such domestic paid positions will not be counted as overseas working experience.

(6) An applicant should have achieved scientific research or technology outcomes recognized by peer experts and have the potential to become an academic leader or outstanding talent in their field of research;

(7) The applicant has not yet returned (come) to work full-time in China, or has returned (come) to work in China after January 1, 2024. Upon being notified of the grant, the applicant must resign from their overseas job and return (come) to work in China full-time for at least 3 years;

(8) Program limitations: Applicants must comply with the coordinating management rules for national science and technology talent programs. Talents may participate in only one talent program at the same tier at a time. Additionally, those who have received support from higher-tier programs are not eligible to apply for lower-tier programs.

2. Application Process

(1) Applicants need to download and fill out the "Application Form for the Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas) Based in PUMCH" from the hospital's official website, and submit it alongside their CV, reference letter, and related materials to pumch_hr@126.com with the subject line being "name+2025 Excellent Young Scientists Fund (Overseas)" by March 16, 2025;

(2) Expert review, interview, etc.;

(3) Sign an agreement of intent with PUMCH, and log in to the application system (scan the QR code below) to fill out the application form by April 9, 2025.
