On September 5, 2024, as the China Medical Board (CMB) celebrates its 110th anniversary, a delegation led by Dr. Harvey V. Fineberg, CMB Chair-Elect, Dr. Roger Glass, President, and Dr. Barbara J. Stoll, Executive Vice President, visited PUMCH. They were warmly received by PUMCH President Zhang Shuyang and Vice Presidents Han Ding and Du Bin. The two sides had productive talks about deepening future cooperation and unveiled the Multi-function Hall in the Internal Medicine Building that went through renovation funded by CMB.

During the meeting, President Zhang Shuyang highlighted the fruitful collaboration between PUMCH and CMB in medical education, talent development, and scientific innovation. She emphasized that this partnership has significantly propelled PUMCH’s development and contributed Chinese solutions to the advancement of global medicine. She expressed hope for continued cooperation in areas such as high-level talent exchanges, faculty training, postgraduate education, the consortium of elite teaching hospitals, and technological innovation, thereby pooling wisdom and resources for medical advances worldwide.

CMB trustees profusely praised PUMCH’s high-quality development and recent achievements in healthcare, education, and research. They all believed that PUMCH stands at the forefront of global healthcare, relentlessly pursuing innovation and excellence. At the dedication ceremony, President Zhang Shuyang characterized the reciprocal friendship between PUMCH and CMB with three key phrases, namely “long-running history”, “continuous growth”, and “forward-looking vision”. President Zhang traced the “long-running history” from PUMCH’s birth funded by the Rockefeller-endowed CMB to the more recent signing of two collaborative agreements, emphasizing a century of commitment to each other. She illustrated “continuous growth” through joint initiatives like the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals and the clinical postdoctoral program, as well as their efforts in creating a model for China-US civil exchange and cooperation in the new era; all these activities of interactions and mutual learning have strengthened the strategic partnership between CMB and PUMCH. The “forward-looking vision” was exemplified by CMB and PUMCH’s shared commitment to exploring the frontier of global healthcare. Now, as CMB celebrates its 110th anniversary, both parties are poised to open a new chapter in their collaboration by broadening, upgrading and deepening their cooperation.

In her speech, Dr. Barbara Stoll emphasized the profound significance of CMB trustees’ visit to PUMCH on the occasion of CMB’s 110th anniversary. They were delighted to meet old friends at PUMCH and continue the century-long friendship and cooperation between the two institutions. Dr. Stoll expressed great satisfaction at the dedication ceremony of the multi-function hall. It is an important venue for many activities at PUMCH, particularly academic events, providing a favorable environment for staff and students to acquire new knowledge and pursue lifelong learning. She went on to point out that safeguarding life and health is the shared aspiration of both CMB and PUMCH and affirm that both sides will work together to tackle future challenges and make meaningful contributions to building a global community of health for all.
