Discipline development is the core of high-quality development of hospitals. Despite the heavy burden of combating COVID-19 and providing regular medical services, PUMCH seeks to coordinate COVID controls and discipline development. From December 14, 2022 to January 9, 2023, the hospital held 54 well-designed and innovative sessions that integrated supervision of discipline development, work report by and assessment of departmental heads, and democratic recommendations of candidates for departmental heads. Hospital-wide and concerted efforts have been made to open a new chapter in the high-quality development of PUMCH.

The sessions were held online. All the hospital leaders and 16 senior professors presided over the sessions and eight discipline supervisory teams joined the medical and nursing staff of each discipline in listening to the discipline development presentation and annual report of the director and deputy director of their respective department. Secret ballot votes were cast for the democratic assessment of the directors and deputy directors. For some departments that need to appoint a new director, candidates were recommended democratically.

PUMCH President Zhang Shuyang said: “Discipline development provides the driving force underpinning high-quality development of the hospital. We can’t afford to wait or slow down. Instead, we must push forward discipline development with grit and tenacity so that the certainty gained from it can help us offset various uncertainties such as the changes in the epidemic situations. We need to pursue world-class discipline development at a faster pace to accelerate high-quality development and better safeguard people’s health.”

The presentations and reports of the Department of Internal Medicine focused on talents and platforms. The Department of Surgery and various surgical specialties frequently talked about “aspiring to greater heights” and “seeking innovative development”. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology demonstrated the strong vitality and overall strength of subspecialties such as gynecological oncology, endometriosis, pelvic floor disorders and reproductive tract abnormalities. All departments enumerated their plans, lists and innovations, demonstrating their steadfast strides towards high-quality development of their specialty.
