Recently, the results of the first Zhong Nanshan Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award, whose final review and approval rests with 11 academicians led by Academician Zhong Nanshan, were officially announced. From 100 candidates recommended by 55 institutions, 10 young science and technology professionals emerged as the final winners. One of them is Dr. Wu Nan, the associate chief physician of the Department of Orthopedics Surgery and director of the Youth Affairs Department of PUMCH, the director of the Key Laboratory of Spinal Deformity Big Data Research and Application of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and doctoral tutor.

As a young doctor and scientific researcher of PUMCH, Wu Nan, with the strong support of the hospital and department, has made outstanding achievements in scientific research. He has played an important role in various groundbreaking accomplishments of PUMCH, including the discovery of the most important pathogenic factor of congenital scoliosis for the first time in the world, the discovery of a new pathogenic mechanism of congenital scoliosis, the definition of a novel subtype of congenital scoliosis, and the establishment of a corresponding prediction system, etc. The relevant research results have been published at very influential journals such as the “New England Journal of Medicine” and have been well-recognized among international peers. Dr. Wu Nan’s clinical application of innovative outcomes through the skeletal deformity genetic clinic under the department also benefits many patients.
