Introduction:

This is a biography of Zeng Xianjiu, who laid the foundation of such disciplines as basic surgery, critical illnesses and parenteral and enteral nutrition in modern China. Zeng's life epitomizes the growth of modern surgery in China, as well as the common fate of a generation of intellectuals who chose to love their country by seeking truth and science. Zeng is a typical "Chinese scholar", who is rigorous in learning, optimistic, modest and always putting his medical career above fame and wealth. Till today China's modern basic surgery is still going forward on the track laid down by Zeng. In an era that calls for the return of faith and masters, respect must be paid to this great man.
