On September 10, 2026, the PUMCH History Museum officially reopened following a comprehensive renovation, marking the hospital’s 105th anniversary. Tracing 105 years of progress, the exhibition illustrates how PUMCH has continuously evolved in step with the nation’s destiny, people’s health, and the progress of modern medicine in China. Looking ahead, it reflects the hospital’s resolve to embark on its second centenary with renewed vigor, advancing high-quality development in service to the people and the era.
PUMCH is widely hailed as an epitome of China’s modern medical progress, and its history comes to life in this museum, a living testament to the institution’s core ethos. The renovated exhibition spans six thematic sections: Prologue, Foundations, Transformations, Advancements, New Horizons, and Glory. Weaving together 50,000 characters of narrative, nearly 1,000 photographs, 173 historical artifacts, 34 multimedia exhibits, and four faithfully recreated scenes, the exhibition delivers an immersive experience with historical depth, academic substance, and emotional resonance, establishing a shared cultural and spiritual anchor for generations of healers.
Walking through the gallery titled “The Spiritual Lineage of the Communist Party of China: PUMCH Through the Ages”, one immediately feels a deep and steadfast sense of conviction. Over the past 105 years, PUMCH staff have consistently carried forward this spirit, stepping forward to meet challenges whenever and wherever the country and its people needed them.
Four oil paintings anchor the exhibition’s art collection, chronicling four defining periods in modern Chinese history: the New-Democratic Revolution, the Socialist Revolution and Construction, the Reform and Opening-up, and the New Era of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. PUMCH commissioned three original works—“The Flames of War: PUMCH Wartime Medical Team” (capturing faculty and students serving troops in the Defense of the Great Wall in 1933 during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression); “Defending the Nation” (depicting the departure of the volunteer surgical team in 1951 during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea); and “Giving Our All” (portraying contemporary PUMCH clinicians tackling complex and rare diseases head-on), alongside an authorized replica of the “Spring for Science” from the collection of the National Art Museum of China (commemorating the landmark 1978 National Science Conference). Together, these masterworks manifest a century of PUMCH marching ahead in lockstep with the Party, the nation, and its people—ever progressing with the tide of history.
In the first exhibition hall, the founding pledge established more than a century ago—“to recruit world-class scholars, build a world-class medical school, and nurture world-class medical talent”—remains as resounding and inspiring as ever, galvanizing today’s PUMCH staff in their pursuit of “building a world-class hospital”. Precious artifacts, including the historic “master key”, reflect the hospital’s uncompromising administration and discipline, while an animated presentation of the classic “Grand Rounds” cartoons brings to life time-honored traditions rooted in PUMCH’s DNA, such as multidisciplinary collaboration and bedside medicine.
In the second hall, the “Masters of Medicine” exhibit faithfully recreates the daily settings of three legendary physicians at work and in life: Zhang Xiaoqian, Lin Qiaozhi, and Zeng Xianjiu. Through immersive exhibition technologies, visitors deeply connect with their profound reverence for life and lifelong pursuit of scientific truth.
The “Triumphs over Challenges” section in the third hall showcases the comprehensive clinical systems PUMCH has developed through decades of tackling complex, critical, and rare diseases, highlighting precision treatment regimens and cutting-edge medical technologies for specific diseases. These stories of lives saved provide a vivid testament to the institution’s core philosophy: placing people and their lives above all else, and serving as the ultimate beacon of hope for patients in critical need.
Before the “Global Community of Health for All” multimedia installation, glasses-free 3D visuals take visitors on a journey following PUMCH medical professionals who have served across the nation, and highlight moments when PUMCH leaders across generations stepped onto the global stage to share Chinese clinical insights and deepen international collaboration.
