On June 29, the Macao Medical Center of PUMCH held its mid-year work report for 2026 and simultaneously completed the handover of a new cohort of seconded staff. Zhang Shuyang, President of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH), and Han Ding, President of the Strategic Development Committee of the Macao Medical Center of PUMCH, attended the meeting and delivered remarks. Liu Zhengyin, Director of the Macao Medical Center of PUMCH, chaired the session. The handover — spanning thousands of kilometers — is more than a cross-regional deployment of quality medical resources; it is a concrete expression of the deepening integration between the Chinese mainland and Macao healthcare under "One Country, Two Systems."

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the CPC Central Committee with President Xi Jinping at its core has consistently placed people’s health at the top of its strategic priorities. "Actively respond to people's needs, invest more in people's livelihood and well-being, and make solid progress on housing, healthcare, education, elderly care, and other practical matters that benefit the public" — these were the words that President Xi Jinping addressed to Macao at the welcoming banquet hosted by the Macao SAR Government on December 19, 2024. On January 14 this year, Lei Haichao, Minister of the National Health Commission, visited the Macao Medical Center of PUMCH for an inspection, commending its work across all areas and setting out seven specific requirements, including strengthening the building of hospital culture.

The PUMCH team has taken this guidance to heart and pressed ahead with the Center's development. Over the past year, grounded in the reality of Macao healthcare, the Center has strengthened its clinical departments and invested in its workforce, with its seconded specialists providing the core leadership throughout. To date, the Center has performed more than 3,500 surgical procedures, of which over 400 have been complex, high-risk cases. It has established the largest oncology radiation therapy center in Macao, so that patients no longer need to travel elsewhere for radiotherapy. A nuclear medicine department has been established and opened — filling a longstanding gap in Macao's public healthcare system. In support of the Macao SAR Government's Medically Assisted Reproduction Subsidy Programme, the assisted reproduction center began trial operations in July 2025 and has already seen successful pregnancies. The intensive care unit opened formally on June 22, 2026, substantially improving the Center's emergency and critical care capabilities. General wards, a day surgery unit, and other facilities have opened in succession, with the emergency center now seeing over 200 patients a day on average.

On the management side, the Center has introduced a consolidated department structure, establishing a Department of Internal Medicine, a Department of Surgery, and a Department of Medical Technology, with the aim of removing silos between specialties and making better use of available resources. Beyond its clinical work, the Center has engaged actively with the community through public health education, free clinics, and advisory services, fulfilling its social responsibilities in multiple roles and bringing quality care to more Macao residents.

In her remarks, President Zhang Shuyang strongly commended the efforts and contributions of the team seconded to Macao. She stressed that the Center's development must rest on "the combination of upholding core principles and embracing innovation" — upholding PUMCH's professional ethos, quality standards, and approach to talent development, while adapting to Macao's local management culture, service philosophy, and collaborative environment. The aim is to build a sustainable relationship with Macao's local medical institutions based on differentiated positioning, complementary strengths, and shared benefit — so that Macao residents can access, close to home, the same standard of high-quality medical care available on the mainland. She called for continued innovation, converting the country's medical strengths into real health gains for Macao residents, and allowing the institutional advantages of "One Country, Two Systems" to translate into a genuine sense of benefit and security for the people of Macao. President Zhang encouraged the incoming cohort to make the most of this opportunity and work toward building a medical center rooted in the Greater Bay Area, extending its reach to Southeast Asia, and carrying international influence, making greater contributions to the health of Macao residents.
