PUMCH recently received a letter from the parent of a young patient with every line filled with gratitude and respect. The parent recounted how their child had fallen from a bicycle on the way to school, suffering a bleeding wound near the temple. It was the height of the morning rush, and the child was left helpless in a critical situation amid the rushing crowds. Luckily, Liu Xin, Associate Chief Pharmacist from PUMCH's Department of Pharmacy, happened to be passing by on her way to work. Without a moment's hesitation, she stopped, used her medical knowledge to control the bleeding and calm the child, and personally accompanied him to the emergency department. The parent wrote a letter of appreciation, stating that pharmacist Liu Xin's kindness made them feel the warmth of a healer's heart in its truest form. The full letter is as follows:
I am writing this letter with the deepest gratitude. On behalf of my family, I want to express our most heartfelt thanks and highest respect to Pharmacist Liu Xin from your hospital's Department of Pharmacy who came to my child’s aid in a moment of crisis.
At around 7 o'clock on the morning of April 21st, my child was cycling to school when he fell near the Inner Mongolia Grand Hotel. He was riding fast and the impact was hard — he sustained a laceration near the left temple that bled profusely, along with multiple abrasions across his body. He lay on the road, his face covered in blood, briefly losing consciousness.
Pharmacist Liu Xin, who happened to be walking past on her way to work, stopped immediately. She knelt beside my child, assessed his condition, and contacted us right away. With no medical supplies on hand, she spoke gently to keep him calm while swiftly examining his injuries with practised ease and performing initial wound management. Not wanting to delay treatment, she then hailed a taxi and personally escorted him to PUMCH's emergency department.
Once at the hospital, she helped with registration, found the doctors my child needed, stayed in contact with us, and remained by his side — a reassuring, family-like presence — until she was certain we had arrived. What moved me most was this: when I rushed in, still in a panic, she gave me a brief account of what had happened and quietly slipped away. My husband tried several times to get her contact information, but she simply said: ‘Go take care of your child’, and left without giving her name or contact information. It was only after asking around that we finally learned the identity of this quiet hero — Pharmacist Liu Xin, from the Department of Pharmacy at PUMCH.
PUMCH has long been regarded as a beacon of medical excellence. What Pharmacist Liu Xin did that morning reminded us that behind that reputation is something far more human — in the middle of a cold, rushed city morning, one person stopped, and that made all the difference. She did not just treat my child's wounds. Through her actions, she planted something lasting in him: a seed of kindness and the courage to do what is right. She embodied the spirit that PUMCH has always stood for — treating every patient as family — and in that critical moment, she showed what it truly means to step forward. This is the character of a century-old institution built on the principles of dedication to the nation, service to the people, and the pursuit of truth.
We are endlessly grateful for what Pharmacist Liu Xin did. And we are grateful to PUMCH for nurturing someone of such expertise and such character.
Words on a page can only go so far. We wish Pharmacist Liu Xin every success in her work and a life full of peace and happiness. And we wish PUMCH continued greatness, bringing health and hope to ever more patients and families.
