On December 13, 2025, the International Medical Service (IMS) Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) hosted its "Discover PUMCH—Open Day/Experience Day" event, welcoming over 30 representatives from foreign embassies and consulates, commercial health insurance institutions, and leading corporations and enterprises. Through facility tours, interactive experiences, and health knowledge communications, guests gained firsthand insight into the hospital's century-long legacy and overall capabilities in medical innovation, integrated Chinese-Western medicine, health management, and international healthcare services.
The event began with tours of the hospital's history museum and medical records exhibition. The museum's invaluable archives chronicle PUMCH's over 100-year journey of forging ahead relentlessly through trials and tribulations; the medical records from renowned physicians showcase the hospital's groundbreaking and pioneering contributions in treating complex and severe diseases and rare conditions.
An array of special activities centering around TCM highlighted the remarkable potential of ancient healing practices. The TCM department presented clinical applications of acupuncture, cupping, and other therapies, as well as the distinctive advantages of integrated Chinese-Western medicine clinics in treating sleep disorders, weight management, chronic diseases, and adjuvant treatment of cancer. Guests also tasted customized wellness herbal teas and experienced traditional techniques like auricular acupressure with seeds. Such activities gave them a firsthand experience of the unique wisdom of TCM. The international guests enthusiastically engaged with TCM specialists, asking detailed questions about mechanisms of action and clinical applications.
During the health education seminars and wellness management sessions, experts delivered practical talks on preventing colds and flu, topics close to everyday life. Guests then participated in body composition analysis, rapid blood glucose and blood pressure screening, and AI-assisted retinal imaging. Medical staff provided one-on-one result interpretation and personalized health guidance, reinforcing the principle of "prevention first, early screening for early detection".
A short documentary showcased the comprehensive, multilingual, customized, and patient-centered service model of IMS. Five students from the Affiliated Middle School of the Central Conservatory of Music, led by Professor Lida, then performed beautiful classical pieces, creating a warm and cozy vibe on Beijing's first snowy day.
Following the presentations, guests engaged in in-depth discussions with the IMS team on long-term health management plans and direct billing, among other topics.
A Canadian couple who flew in specifically for the event described their experience. They visited IMS for a health checkup in 2023. Gastroenterology screening detected gastroesophageal reflux, intestinal polyps, and H. pylori infection, which were subsequently treated at PUMCH. Impressed by the results, they have become strong believers of PUMCH and now return annually for health checkups at PUMCH.
Dr. Tian Zhuang, Director of IMS (Dongdan Campus), emphasized the department's commitment to fostering openness, collaboration, and inclusivity. Moving forward, IMS will launch diverse initiatives, broaden and deepen partnerships. It aspires to deliver high-quality medical and health management services that meet international standards and address local healthcare needs, contributing meaningfully to the “Healthy China” initiative.
