In 2015, initiated by the China Medical Board (CMB) and guided by the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, with the strong support of the Ministry of Education, Peking Union Medical College Hospital took the lead along with other 6 renowned teaching hospitals which have time-honored traditions and high-quality resources in medical education, including the Peking University First Hospital, the Zhongshan Hospital of Fudan University, the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, the Xiangya Hospital of Central-south University and the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, to establish the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals for Residency Education, to facilitate the reform and development of graduate medical education in China.
In the past ten years, with the addition of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong, the Peking University Third Hospital, and the Ruijin Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University, the Consortium has expanded to ten members. Member hospitals have strengthened experience-sharing and collaborative research. In the new era of China, they are cultivating more competent health professionals and taking solid steps forward.
In the ten years since its establishment, the Consortium carried out series of communications on faculty development, competency assessment, simulation center, information platform, certification and accreditation, etc. Consortium members have held medical education forums on a rotating basis. They have invited world-renowned medical educators to China to share experience and help improve the quality of medical education.
