From May 26-28, 2025, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority Convention was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Mr. Cao Xuetao, Vice Minister of the National Health Commission, attended the opening ceremony. At the invitation of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority (HA), a PUMCH delegation led by Honorary President Academician Zhao Yupei, President Zhang Shuyang, and Vice President Wu Wenming (who also serves as President of the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Center of PUMCH) participated in the convention to discuss new chapters in high-quality healthcare development with medical experts worldwide. President Zhang delivered a keynote address at the plenary session on May 26, sharing the “PUMCH experience” in driving high-quality hospital development. Over the past decade, PUMCH and HA have signed two cooperation agreements, continuously deepening collaboration across multiple fields and making significant contributions to advancing high-quality healthcare development in both mainland China and Hong Kong.
In her presentation titled "Leading PUMCH into Its New Century through High-Quality Development", President Zhang outlined PUMCH's three-phase strategic roadmap and provided comprehensive insights into the hospital's innovative practices across four key areas: disciplines, talent, platforms, and mechanisms.
President Zhang highlighted that strengthening discipline development consolidates the foundation for high-quality development. PUMCH maintains strategic focus while continuously building its clinical specialties. Cultivating talent builds the workforce for high-quality development. The hospital develops exceptional and well-structured teams by implementing comprehensive approaches to “attract, develop, retain, and utilize” talents. Enhancing platforms reinforces the key areas for high-quality development. The synergistic deployment of hospital-based platforms, cooperative platforms, research platforms and resources networks creates a powerful ecosystem for growth. Improving mechanisms generates new momentum for high-quality development. By facilitating coordinated quality control, collaborative care models, and integrated management systems, innovative mechanisms unlock the hospital's full potential.
In 2011, during PUMCH's 90th anniversary celebration, the hospital signed the first letter of intent for strategic cooperation with HA, creating a groundbreaking platform for healthcare collaboration between Hong Kong and mainland China. Over the ensuing decade, personnel exchanges have flourished at every level, fostering extensive collaboration spanning numerous specialties, significantly advancing healthcare excellence in both mainland China and Hong Kong. In January 2024, PUMCH and HA signed another strategic partnership agreement, ushering in a new era of joint efforts to further pursue high-quality healthcare development across both mainland China and Hong Kong.
HA has hosted its annual convention since 1993, creating a premier platform for sharing best practices across the healthcare industry. This year's conference brought together approximately 190 healthcare experts from Hong Kong, mainland China, and overseas. They shared expertise and insights across more than 60 breakout sessions covering medical innovation, smart hospitals and AI, organ transplant, and cancer care and prevention. The convention attracted over 8,600 experts and scholars, healthcare professionals, and administrators from around the world.
As healthcare systems nationwide pursue high-quality development, PUMCH continues to exemplify national leadership in care delivery. The hospital remains committed to fostering international collaboration through an open and inclusive approach and leveraging innovation to drive high-quality development. Beyond institutional excellence, PUMCH contributes to building a Healthy China while providing valuable experience for global healthcare advancement.
