The China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals was established in 2015, led by PUMCH and joined by ten members. This year’s gathering registered over 200 attendees, including leaders, invited experts, and clinical teaching representatives from the Ministry of Education, Zhejiang University, the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the National Center for Health Professions Education Development, the China Medical Board, member hospitals of the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals, and various high-quality teaching hospitals nationwide.

During the session on the development of high-level medical talents, PUMCH President Zhang Shuyang shared PUMCH’s practices and innovations from four angles, namely “cultivation, recruitment, utilization, and retention”, with the aim of turning out great doctors and great scientists with both expertise and compassion, in line with the new realities of medical and health development.

At the summary meeting of the Hospital President Program and the Competency Assessment Program of the Consortium, PUMCH Vice President Du Bin shared the research progress on the development of a competency framework for clinical teaching faculty, as well as the development of the faculty evaluation system and curriculum system.

On the morning of the 26th, the PUMCH team toured the headquarters of the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine—the garden-like Yuhang Campus, which includes a well-equipped and well-managed research center that is open and sharing, an internationally advanced clinical skills center, a one-stop outpatient department and a demonstrative ward; the team learned about the hospital’s innovative management practices supported by a smart logistics management system. The team also gained a glimpse into the hospital’s digitization endeavors featuring “one network, one cloud, one system”. In the afternoon, they visited the Qingchun Campus of the hospital and the hospital history museum. The First Affiliated Hospital has carried out a series of innovative reforms underpinned by its digital and intelligent technology application, which have been widely well-received. These reforms serve as valuable references for PUMCH to enhance multi-campus hospital management with digital tools.

Subsequently, the PUMCH team visited the history museum of the Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine and engaged in discussions with representatives including Party Committee Secretary Academician Wang Jian’an, Hospital President Wang Weilin, and heads of functional departments such as research and medical affairs. With ambulatory care and accelerated rehabilitation as levers, the hospital effectively marshaled hospital-wide resources to achieve efficient medical care that emphasizes “benefiting more patients with best quality, shortest time, lower cost, better efficacy”. The hospital has also been very fruitful in scientific and technological innovation, with a leading number of approved projects from the National Natural Science Foundation for 13 consecutive years. Each step of reform and exploration has been distilled into management wisdom, which is then incorporated into the hospital culture. This is what impressed the PUMCH delegation the most about the Second Affiliated Hospital.
