On September 15, coinciding with the 102nd anniversary of the founding of PUMCH, the 2023 PUMCH Medical Education Innovation and Development Forum and the University of Chicago – Peking Union Medical College Hospital MoU Signing Ceremony were held at the PUMCH Lecture Hall. PUMCH President Zhang Shuyang delivered the opening speech, and PUMCH Vice President Wu Peixin moderated the opening ceremony. The forum focused on the innovation of medical education concepts and methods, bringing together and contributing wisdom and resources for the high-quality development of medical education in the new era and building China into a powerhouse in education.

This forum was co-hosted by PUMCH and the China Medical Board (CMB). Broadcast live online, the event has a stellar turnout on site: Lin Huiqing, the Chairperson of the Expert Committee on Medical Education, the Ministry of Education, and former Vice Minister of Education; Qi Xuejin, Vice President of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; Roger I. Glass, President of the CMB; Academician Qiao Jie, Executive Vice President of Peking University; Michael Millis, Faculty Director of the University of Chicago Center in Beijing; Li Wenkai, CMB Chief Representative in Beijing; representatives of members of the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals and more than 500 experts and scholars from hospitals and medical schools in china and abroad.

In her speech, Lin Huiqing spoke highly of PUMCH’s exploration and innovation in medical education and its contribution to talent cultivation for the country. She expressed earnest hopes for the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals led by PUMCH.

Qi Xuejin reviewed the centennial evolution of standardized training of resident physicians that started at PUMCH in 1921. He hoped that PUMCH would continue to forge ahead and make continuous contributions to clinical medical education in the new era.

In her speech, President Zhang Shuyang reviewed the previous four sessions of the PUMCH International Forum on Resident Training, which has become a renowned brand of medical education. She also announced with delight the renewal of partnership between PUMCH and the University of Chicago (UChicago) at this forum. Since she led a delegation to UChicago in 2017, the two sides have had in-depth collaboration in medical education. At this forum, PUMCH and UChicago signed an new MoU to renew their partnership and deepen their exchanges and collaboration, strengthening their bond along the way.

In his speech, Michael Millis looked back on the deep roots and century-long friendship between UChicago and PUMCH. He affectionately called PUMCH the “sister” of UChicago, acknowledged it as the most important partner in medical education, and recognized the fruitful cooperation in the training of medical professionals. He hoped that the renewal of the MoU would propel both parties to further deepen their exchanges and collaboration, making new and greater contributions to improving human health.

The event also featured the MoU Signing Ceremony between UChicago and PUMCH. With representatives of the two sides as witnesses, PUMCH President Zhang Shuyang signed the MoU and Professor Michael Millis, on behalf of Mark Anderson, UChicago’s Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs, attended the MoU Signing Ceremony. Since signing their first cooperation agreement in 2017, the two sides have carried out in-depth collaboration in resident physician training, faculty competency enhancement, and discipline development, achieving a series of remarkable results. Six years after their collaboration kicked off, the two parties have renewed their MoU. Going forward, they will continue to expand the scope of cooperation, promote cooperation upgrading, and deepen cooperation, thereby boosting the high-quality development of medicine, scientific research, and medical education.

During the keynote speech session, Roger I. Glass delivered a speech “Creating the Future Leaders in Healthcare” and Academician Qiao Jie elaborated on “Exploration and Practice of High-quality Faculty Training System in New Medicine”.

Several domestic and international experts in medical education delivered keynote speeches and exchanged ideas on “Innovation in Medical Education” and “Innovative Talent Cultivation”, sparking the generation and flow of insightful ideas.

In the afternoon, two parallel sessions on “Virtual Simulation Teaching” and “Junior Faculty Development” were held in parallel. Renowned scholars and experts in medical education and educators from home and abroad discussed hot topics related to innovative medical education.
