First PUMCH Youth Innovation Camp Started!

On July 28 and 29, the first “PUMCH Youth Innovation Camp” (hereinafter referred to as the Innovation Camp), a training program for youth innovation capabilities, officially kicked off. PUMCH Vice President Wu Peixin attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The training invited Zhao Kaili, Chief of the Project Management Division II, Development Center for Medical Science and Technology, National Health Commission, to deliver thematic training and designed the curriculum around the entire process of innovation. The Innovation Camp represents another exploration by the Youth League of PUMCH on its continuous journey of serving the young, aiming to spot and cultivate innovative young talents and enhance their competency and capabilities.


The first Innovation Camp has an assorted portfolio, which mainly includes five parts, namely the opening ceremony, the orientation course, thematic courses, study tours, and the graduation ceremony. The program seeks to improve and tailor the existing courses to the needs of young medical professionals. The resultant innovative courses will tap into the strengths of the PUMCH platform to help trainees navigate the various stages of translational medicine, inspire them to commit themselves to medical innovation and upskill them for innovative translations, thereby facilitating the successful transformations of more research outcomes. Upon being released, the program drew widespread attention and 140-plus young medical and nursing personnel and graduate students signed up for it.

At the opening ceremony, Vice President Wu Peixin encouraged young PUMCHers to devote themselves to medical innovation, setting sights on the country’s overall development and prosperity. He called on them to aspire to stand at the forefront of medical innovation and become pillars that drive medical progresses to that end, the young PUMCHers need to carry forward the spirit of PUMCH and the fine tradition of their predecessors for “daring to innovate and daring to pioneer”, with the ambition of ushering in a new era when they shine the brightest. They also need to brave the difficulties and obstacles with down-to-earth efforts, strong faiths and firm convictions. Rooted in the broad platform of PUMCH, the young should take the initiative in innovating and shoulder their responsibility and fulfill their mission for the high-quality development of PUMCH in the new centenary ahead.

Division Chief Zhao Kaili delivered a thematic session titled “Interpretation of Policies on Medical Science and Technology Innovation and Translational Medicine”. By giving a systemic analysis, she elucidated the importance of medical science and technology innovation, the significance of translational medicine, and the role and value of physicians in innovating healthcare.

The orientation course was scheduled on July 29. It consisted of six major modules, namely introduction to PUMCH’s policies on translational medicine; the execution pathway of and reflection on translational medicine; key aspects and compliance requirements of medical device innovation; intellectual property protection and high-value patents; introduction to the process and tools of innovation throughout product lifecycle; and introduction to the Biodesign innovation process. The trainees commended the continuity and progressiveness of the courses and found them informative and valuable, which evoked in them great expectations for the subsequent thematic courses.
