On March 25, 2023, the Conference on New Cultural Building among Public Hospitals was held at PUMCH. The participants had in-depth exchanges on the and new cultural building of public hospitals, among other topics, and shared their experience and opinions on fostering a new culture that underpins the high-quality development of public hospitals.

In his speech, Yang Jianli, executive deputy secretary of the party committee of units directly under the National Health Commission and director of the National Steering Committee for Hospital Party Building, said that hospital culture puts on full display the underlying tenets and principles, the spirit and image of hospitals and is an important part of their core competitiveness. In the new journey of the new era, we should adhere to the “people first, life first” tenet. To pursue high-quality development, hospitals should adapt to the new circumstances, nurture compassion and care and vigorously promote professionalism and, in particular, the spirit honed in the fight against COVID-19. In a nutshell, public hospitals should foster a new culture that is characteristic of the profession and relevant to the new era with the ultimate purpose of improving satisfaction of both patients and healthcare professionals.

In her speech, Yuan Li, an official at the Deputy-Director-General rank from the Department of Publicity, National Health Commission (NHC), said that we should preserve and transmit the spiritual resilience and collective memory gained from the fight against COVID-19 and that we should stick to the people-centered path geared towards patients’ needs and improve people’s health and well-being.

Xu Peihai, Director (Executive Vice President) of the Administrators Training Center of the NHC (Party School of the NHC) and Party Secretary of the social organization administration unit under NHC, emphasized the following messages in his speech: (1) we should fully appreciate the importance of building a new culture in public hospitals; (2) it is necessary to clarify the important role of fostering a positive atmosphere that touches everyone in public hospitals; (3) rich experience and productive outcomes that promote high-quality development have been gained from efforts to build cultural cohesiveness in public hospitals.

Wu Peixin, Vice President of PUMCH, shared the hospital’s experience in new culture building. He believed that culture building is the “soul” and inner driver of the high-quality development of public hospitals. Thus, PUMCH would step up cultural building to strengthen the roots of the hospital and shape people’s hearts and minds, underpinning the high-quality development of PUMCH.

The conference announced the winning cases for new culture building of public hospitals. Among the 67 contributions from 64 public hospitals nationwide, the case “The Centennial PUMCH: Fine Tradition and Everlasting Influence” stood out and was awarded Excellent Case of “Seeking Innovation while Preserving Tradition and Enhancing Hospital Performance with Cultural Building”.

Cases of new cultural building in public hospitals will be solicited regularly to expand the cases in the library. With such efforts, cultural building will play a stronger role in the high-quality development of hospitals and make greater contribution to the Healthy China initiative and improvement of people’s health.
