On the afternoon of September 17, 2022, PUMCH held the Youth Innovation Forum, the third event of the series of academic activities to celebrate its 101st anniversary. President Zhang Shuyang, Vice President Wu Peixin and Vice President Yang Dungan of PUMCH attended the event. Eight outstanding young representatives from PUMCH and other medical institutions gathered to discuss youth innovation and development. The activity provides a valuable learning and exchange opportunity for young medical professionals and young scientific and technological talents at PUMCH.
President Wang Chen delivered a keynote speech titled “Good Career Planning for Doctors”. From the perspective of the physician training system and the development path of medical talents, he analyzed the concepts of and connection between medicine and health, and explained the various stages of medical training and the knowledge and skills to be acquired at each stage. President Wang Chen pointed out that doctors should not only do a good job in clinical practices, teaching and scientific research, but also seek to shift from a “disease-centered” to “health-centered” mindset and put the patient first rather than disease treatment. He emphasized that medicine should improve health holistically on six dimensions, namely “health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, control, treatment, and rehabilitation”, which he encouraged physicians to keep in mind and abide by as guidelines for their practices. He also encouraged doctors to practice the concept of population medicine, devote themselves to public health, and work towards greater health, all in a bid to improve health in China overall.
President Zhang Shuyang said that role models can inspire us in ways we can’t imagine. She hoped that today’s forum could inspire young PUMCHers to set clearer goals, have greater faith in them, hone their skills and shoulder their responsibilities. She also hoped that they could make their own career development fit into the Healthy China initiative and make every day count on the journey to pursue their ambitions and contribute to a more glorious PUMCH in the next 100 years ahead.
