On March 2, 2022, the Department of Ophthalmology at PUMCH hosted a forum on ophthalmology management and high-quality development, where Director Chen Youxin proposed the goal of “building a world-class ophthalmology”. In 2021, the Department of Ophthalmology at PUMCH took a step forward. With steady case mix index (CMI) guaranteed, the volume of surgeries rose up to 130% of last year, the number of outpatient visits and examinations saw a steady increase, and the average length of hospital stay registered a continuous decrease.
Through Mutually Reinforcing Teaching and Learning, Our Department Grows with Its Staff
Deputy Director of medical education Zhang Meifen told us that teaching activities at the Department of Ophthalmology are very diverse. Theoretical and skill training overall covers eight sections, among which the biweekly teaching workshop has been credited with first prize at the National Educational Forum. As one of the first departments in PUMCH to open supervised teaching clinics, the Department of Ophthalmology adopts a student-oriented one-to-one teaching mode. Besides, a differentiated training program with graded progressive assessment was applied for ophthalmic postdoctoral trainees. Chief Physician Yu Weihong, the former teaching secretary, told us that a medical education APP application had been developed by the department to assist in teaching and realize precision management. The Department of Ophthalmology also holds a monthly meeting on quality control of medical records and organizes regular reviews of exemplary and problematic medical records.
Precision Management to Improve Quality and Efficacy
Zhang Shunhua, Deputy Director of the Department of Ophthalmology, told us that precision management has leveraged the enthusiasm of all staff in the department to the fullest. The Department of Ophthalmology also converted some beds into daycare wards. In doing so, the volume of surgeries in 2021 rose up to 130% of last year without compromising CMI. The department is also dedicated to establishing partnerships of medical consortium to promote the distribution of quality medical resources to underprivileged areas. Through personalized scheduling, all ophthalmologists can work in a field they are passionate about. To ensure surgical safety, a supervising (surgical) doctor responsibility system was implemented. To address patients’ needs effectively and efficiently, a system featuring intra-group, intra-departmental and multi-departmental discussions for difficult and complex cases was established.
Developing the Department by Youth Training and Cultural Education
Cultural nurturing is a key theme at the Department of Ophthalmology. Over the past years, our department has made much progress in this regard, and our ward has won honorary title of the “National Youth Civilization”.
With an aim to become a world-class ophthalmology department, we will continue to provide quality medicine services, put research outcomes into practice, and cultivate outstanding professionals.
