It was January 25, 2022, the third day since the medical service station opened.
“Lin Chen, we received a Chinese staff member with fever, he is a middle-aged security guard.”
“Noted, let’s each follow the SOP and start action.”
Thus, Dr. Peng began to act: inquire about his conditions and document the epidemiological investigation, explain the dos and don’ts for transfer, write a summary of the condition, enter information in the medical system and double check it, and complete the medical information reporting and infectious disease symptom monitoring.
In non-emergency situations, a transfer is not something that we can initiate whenever we want. Medical Manager Shi Di and I have to communicate with focal points of other areas back and forth, such as venues, the Organizing Committee, hospitals, public health, places of residence, hotel, security and our competent Beijing Emergency Center team.
Making all those calls made me agitated, and Ms. Xiao Wen was still buried in paperwork, and next to us Doctor Peng said loudly: “Do you have a medical insurance card? Remember to bring your ID card. Do you have enough money with you?”
Hearing that, I added “inquiry about expenses” to my list of things to communicate about.
“Do you know how to book the Winter Olympic shuttle vehicle in the closed loop? If you don’t, I can teach you.”
Hearing that, I went to find the QR code for booking the shuttle vehicle.
“Ordinary cold is very common, just sleep more and drink more water, and you will be fine.”
The voice was in a much softer tone.
“This is our telephone number, and you can call it any time of the day, and you can call it when you go back to your place of residence as well.”
“Nothing to worry about, rest assured. Feel free to talk to me if you have anything on your mind.”
Their conversation went on.
Somehow, my agitation and fidgety all went away, and I felt calm. Eventually the transfer went smoothly.
Coming back to reality and looking at the two pieces of paper with perfectly legible writing, I understand why doctor Peng Huiming was being so patient and so meticulous and why the “lady duo” of Yang Chen and Bai Shanshan followed up on that patient daily. Indeed, that is what every PUMCHer has been living by every day: adding a human touch to medical services; luckily, that human touch and warm care of PUMCH has traveled far and wide during the Winter Olympics.
