Since its inauguration, the Winter Olympic Ward of PUMCH has received international patients for 16 times, and it is well-received among higher-level departments and its patients. The Winter Olympic Ward ran a tight ship of medical care provision. Before receiving a patient, the medical staff would have a thorough discussion of the patient’s condition and set the corresponding diagnosis and treatment plan; after receiving the patient, they would review the entire diagnosis and treatment process, seeking improvement wherever they can so that they could be fully prepared for the next appointment with the patient.

On the evening of January 7, 2022, the Winter Olympic Ward received a notification from the manager of the medical service station that a foreign patient with hand trauma was about to be transferred to PUMCH. The medical staff on duty that day quickly prepared for it. 20 minutes later, when the ambulance carrying the patient arrived at the hospital, medical staff were already waiting at the entrance of the Winter Olympic Ward. Subsequently, the Department of Plastic Surgery performed professional plastic surgery sutures for the patient. Many medical care procedures that would have been simple at ordinary times have become more difficult with epidemic prevention and control measures in place, but the well-trained medical staff managed to meet the patient’s medical needs satisfyingly. The patient’s surgical wound healed as fast as expected, and he expressed his gratitude to PUMCH repeatedly.

The second patient admitted to the ward was a high-ranking official of the International Olympic Committee who suffered low back pain. The night before the admission, to accommodate the tight schedule of the patient, the ward acquired his medical records in advance through the medical manager of the medical service station and organized relevant department personnel to conduct pre-diagnosis discussions online. The preparation work lasted until 10 p.m. The next morning, the entire medical and nursing team in the Winter Olympic Ward was ready, and personnel from the Department of Orthopedics Surgery, of Anesthesiology, and of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation entered the ward for consultation. Under the coordination of the hospital leaders and the Department of Medical Affairs, the diagnosis and treatment went smoothly and orderly. After performing physiotherapy massage for the patient, the rehabilitation physician returned to the cleaning area, with his clothes completely soaked in sweat. Then the Department of Anesthesiology skillfully performed an ultrasound-guided nerve block for the patient to satisfactory pain relief effect. Thanks to the smooth cooperation of the multi-disciplinary team and well-coordinated diagnosis and treatment steps, the patient was able to leave the hospital on time. PUMCH’s superb and efficient medical services impressed the patient, who expressed sincere gratitude to the hospital.

Mr. C, a Swiss expert, suffered from severe low back pain due to long work hours, and was transferred to the Winter Olympic Ward of PUMCH for quick pain relief. The hospital quickly organized the Department of Orthopedics Surgery, of Anesthesiology, and of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation to carry out a multidisciplinary consultation and evaluation, the initial conclusion of which was lumbodorsal  myofasciitis. Then a rehabilitation physician skillfully performed massage therapy, which quickly relieved the patient’s pain. After receiving the multidisciplinary consultation and efficient treatment, Mr. C left a message for the Winter Olympic Ward:

“The team was amazing! Never received such good care! Dr. Jo did a fantastic massage and I really feel better already. Xie Xie! Together for a shared future!”

On the evening of February 4, all the medical staff in the Winter Olympic Ward watched the grand opening of the 24th Winter Olympics, which was soul-stirring and tear-jerking. The opening ceremony conveyed to the world the message that different snowflakes come together to become a giant snowflake shared by mankind, likewise the medical service teams of PUMCH, through their high-quality and compassionate medical care, tell the world the Chinese story and boost China’s image.
