20 moments of PUMCH in 70 years of new China

On Jan 20th, 1951, Ministry of Health, Central People’s Government took over Private Peking Union Medical Hospital. After that, the hospital was renamed as the Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH).



In the 1950s, PUMCH sent a large number of medical talents to major medical colleges, research institutions and hospitals across the country, playing an irreplaceable role in healthcare development in New China.



In 1957, Xiaoqian Zhang took huge political risk to hand in a proposal to the central government, suggesting the resumption of Peking Union Medical College. The central government instructed that PUMCH could follow their previous practice of medical training as long as it adhered to the leadership of the Communist Party. This guideline was simplified to “Leadership of the Party” and “Old PUMCH”. This is a fair copy of Dr. Zhang’s handwritten proposal.



From 1965 to 1977, PUMCH sent 94 batches of medical teams to more than 60 regions across the country. Lots of famous experts was included, such as Dr. Qiaozhi Lin, Dr. Xiaoqian Zhang, Dr. Xianjiu Zeng, Dr. Jiasi Huang, Dr. Yingkai Wu, Dr. shihao Liu, and Dr. Hongjiong Li, etc. They introduced remarkable experience to the local doctors. In 1971, US Secretary of state Kissinger visited China. The accompanying vicepresident of the New York Times, James Reston, got sick during the journey. He was sent to PUMCH and received a successful acute appendicitis operation by Dr. Wei-ran Wu, Dr. Xian-jiu Zeng and Dr. Yu Zhu. Mr. Reston published this special experience on the front page of New York Times on Jul 26th, 1971.



In 1985, the research of radical treatment of Choriocarcinoma and its promotion, led by Prof. Hongzhao Song won the first prize of National Technology Improvement Awards. The study changed the deadly cancer Choriocarcinoma from mortality of 90% to cure rate of 90% with chemotherapy. Patients could give birth to healthy babies after treatment as well. In 1991, China organized hospital accreditation for the first time. PUMCH passed the review with highest score and became one of the first batch of Class A tertiary hospitals in China.


In 1991, at the time of the 70th anniversary of PUMCH, “Preciseness, Ever-improving, Diligence, Devotion” are nominated as core spirits of PUMCH.



Yifan Shi,academician of endocrinology department, led a multidisciplinary team composed of 9 departments to carry out a research on hormone secreting pituitary tumor. In 1992, this project won first prize of National Technology Improvement Awards.



In 2003, the emerging respiratory infectious diseases SARS attacked Beijing heavily. PUMCH separated 4 special wards for SARS patients, over 1000 doctors and nurses participated in the first-line treatment. The only qualified virus strain used for vaccine was collected by PUMCH staff. This virus strain was named as “PUMC”. The picture is a postcard signed by doctors and nurses participated in SCARS treatment.



PUMCH was the designated hospital for 2008 Beijing Olympic medical treatment. We sent 128 doctors to 6 sites. Hundreds of experts guarded the Olympic Ward. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, PUMCH successfully rescued an American tourist stabbed by knife, contributing to minimize the impact of emergencies. American Embassy was highly appreciated for the efforts and sent PUMCH a Special Contribution Award.


In January 2011, Fudan University released the Best Chinese Hospital Ranking for the first time. Since then, PUMCH has been ranking first for consecutive 9 years.



On Sept 28th, 2012, PUMCH officially opened the new Outpatient Building. Patients could complete all the medical processes within the building. Soon, the Emergency Building and Surgical Building opened in succession. PUMCH greatly improved its infrastructure and medical processes.



In August, 2015, the Organization Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, together with the National Health Commission started the Group Aid to Tibet program. PUMCH led the Medical Talents’ Group Aid to Tibet campain and sent the first medical team to Tibet Autonomous Region People’s Hospital.



On Oct 31st , 2015, PUMCH International Conference on Residency Education and the 5th Westlake Forum was held in Beijing. PUMCH took the lead in establishing the “China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals for Residency Training”.



On May 25th, 2016, PUMCH officially launched the clinical medicine postdoctoral program, resuming the tradition of small-scale medical elite education, creating a suitable training mode for national condition of China and being in line with international standards.



On Jun 8th, 2017, groundbreaking ceremony of PUMCH Translational Medicine Building took place on the site of the old outpatient building. PUMCH Translational Medicine Building is planned to be completed and to be put into trial operation in 2020, and officially put into use in 2021 on the 100th anniversary of PUMCH.



In Nov 2017, dispatched by National Health Commission, PUMCH experts led the Journey to Brightness Medical Assistance Team to Laos, providing cataract surgery to local patients in Vientiane, capital of Laos. Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission visited medical workers from PUMCH in Brightness Journey campaigns.



On Oct 24th, 2018, PUMCH took the lead to set up the Alliance for Rare Diseases in China. President of PUMCH, Academician Yupei Zhao took up the post of board chairman of the Alliance. The alliance is instrumental to concentrating resources and will boost the treatment of rare diseases in China. At its launch on Wednesday, the alliance released its first explanatory catalog of China's rare diseases.



On Dec 21st, 2018, PUCMH held a theme event called “All for People, All for patients”, launching its 1000-day countdown to the Century PUMCH.
