The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has recently released the results of grants application for the year 2019. Up to 69 grants from Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) were approved, among which one was supported by Key Program, 45 by General Program, and 23 by Excellent Young Scientists Fund. The sum of these grants reached 32.7 million CNY (or 4.60 million USD). Both the number and amount of the grants received were historically high in PUMCH history.
Two nursing grants were awarded, for the first in PUMCH history. Six grants applied by postdocs recruited by PUMCH in the past three years were also approved. Eight departments including the Department of Ultrasound Medicine, Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Department of Orthopaedics, Department of General Surgery, Department of Endocrinology, Department of Neurology, and Department of Gastroenterology have been awarded the grants for five consecutive years.
This achievement was inseparable from the synergy in the inputs from the leaders and scientific researchers and the innovation in scientific research management. When the application for the grants of National Natural Science Foundation of China was initiated at the beginning of 2019, the Scientific Research Office played an active role in the organization and planning and for the first time proposed that at least 50% of medical staff in each department should submit an application. Meanwhile, based on the application terms and conditions released by the foundation, the Scientific Research Office captured the information on qualified applicants in each department and fed it up with the department chiefs, so as to push for active participation and engagement from all department staff. In addition, the office also helped to review and revise the grant applications and invited experts to offer face-to-face and precise counseling to the applicants, which greatly improved the quality of the applications.
Although the results of grant application in 2019 were the best in PUMCH history, the hospital still has a long way to go to catch up with other hospitals that are traditionally strong in scientific research.
2019 is a crucial year for the reform and innovation and for promoting the "Construction of Six Major Systems” in PUMCH. The Regular Board Meeting of PUMCH has approved to appropriate fund to each of the scientific research project approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2019 at a ratio of 1:1, with an attempt to further accelerate the construction of the "Scientific and Technological Innovation System", actively implement the research priorities in 2019, and offer financial assistance and incentives.
Through the joint efforts of all staff, the overall capacity of scientific research of PUMCH as well as the academic and specialty ranks of the hospital and its departments will be constantly increased, which will ultimately contribute to the realization of the “One Hundred Years of PUMC Dream."
