An event cerebrating the completion of the postdoctoral fellowship in clinical medicine for 2016 grade postdocs was held in the Academic Hall of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) on the afternoon of July 10, 2019. Participants in the ceremony included: Zhao Yu Pei, director of PUMCH & academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Ba Denian, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Hu Wenzhong, deputy director of the Professional Personnel Department, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security; Chen Xinyu, deputy director of Science and Education Department, National Health Commission; Wenkai Li, chief representative, Beijing Representative Office, China Medical Board (CMB); and all other leaders of PUMCH, department/division chiefs, mentors, all clinical medicine postdocs, and representatives of medical students. They met to congratulate the first group of clinical medicine postdocs who had smoothly finished their postdoctoral program in PUMCH.

The event kicked off by a summary video that looks back the valuable training experiences of these postdocs and the unremitting efforts of the faculty and staff for the project. Academician Ba Denian, creator and promoter of the “Clinical Medicine Postdoctoral Program”, applauded the achievements of PUMHC in the training of medical talents. On behalf of tutors, Prof. Zhang Fengchun, chief of the Department of Internal Medicine of PUMHC, congratulated the postdocs who had successfully completed the three-year training program and expressed his earnest expectations for their future work.

The post-doctoral program in clinical medicine not only trains high-level versatile medical talents but also ensures that there are high-quality teachers for the construction and development of the standardized training system for residents in China. In the past three years, PUMCH has continuously optimized its systems and policies on postdoctoral programs by adopting innovative management, increasing investment, intensifying recruitment efforts, and strengthening performance assessment. It has developed tailored training programs based on the concept of “core competency of residents”. The trainees may serve as a group leader during their "advanced training” in the Department of Internal Medicine, act as the main operator during the staged training in the Department of Surgery, or participate in the multi-base rotation system in the Department of Anesthesiology. All these designs effectively improved the postdocs’ clinical skills and capabilities. Based on both formative assessment and summative assessment, the trainees were evaluated comprehensively by using methods such as Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and 360° Assessment. The hospital also actively collected feedback from the trainees and the project staff, with an attempt to continuously optimize the project management and design and thus create a "PUMCH Mode" for the training of top medical talents in China.

The ceremony marks the considerable headway that has been made in the training of clinical medicine postdocs in PUMHC. It’s a milestone, and also a gift to coming Centennial Ceremony of the hospital.
