3rd PUMCH Pediatrics Forum Focuses on Precision Medicine

On the occasion of the 97th founding anniversary of PUMCH, its Third Pediatrics Forum was held at the Lecture Hall. The event was co-hosted by the Department of Pediatrics, PUMC and Society of Pediatrics, Beijing Medical Association. Nearly 400 representatives from across the country participated. Themed “Precise Treatment of Pediatric Diseases”, the event focused on individualized treatment and prevention of children’s diseases, related genetic diseases and global pediatric developments.


Professor Wu Jianxin, deputy director of Department of Pediatrics, PUMC and deputy director of the Capital Institute of Pediatrics, shared his thoughts on the application of precision medicine in pediatrics, which were based on examples of metabolic diseases and his research experiences. Professor Du Junbao from Peking University First Hospital gave many vivid examples of syncope in Children, explained its causes and looked for individualized therapies.


On the topic of nervous system diseases, Professor Jiang Yuwu, director of Department of Pediatrics, Peking University Health Science Center, talked about new developments under the title “precision therapy for nervous system diseases--taking epilepsy as example”, especially about the discovery of related genes. Professor Zou Liping, doctoral advisor of Tsinghua University and the Chinese PLA Medical School, also gave her thoughts on epilepsy in children based on her rich clinical experience and the newly discovered genes related to epilepsy.

On the topic of immune diseases, Professor Zhao Xiaodong from Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and Professor Zhou Qing from College of Life Sciences, Zhejiang University gave reports on immunodeficiency diseases and autoinflammatory diseases respectively.

On the topic of genetic and rare diseases, Professor Zhang Xue from PUMC and Dr. Zhu Chong, who graduated from PUMC, using vivid language and lots of examples, talked about the course of discovering disease gene to pathogenic mutation in mono-gene diseases, especially about the application of genetics in precision therapy of diseases in children.

On the topic of blood diseases, Professor Xiao Juan, deputy director of Department of Pediatrics, PUMC, talked about “precision therapy for hemophilia”.

On the topic of pharmacy, Professor Song Hongmei talked about pitfalls of drug using, and answered questions on rational drug use.

The following three days saw three sub-forums: difficult cases, premature birth and nursing, at which in-depth discussions were held.

Precision medicine is a medical idea and mode based on individualized medicine and developed along with the cross application of genome sequencing, biological information and big data. This Forum built an academic exchange platform for precision medicine in children’s diseases and contributed to doctors’ expertise and service.
