At 7am, September 27, 2018, PUMCH held at its Lecture Hall an international distance MDT consultation attended by top experts from China and the United States. Eight experts from the hospital led by President Zhao Yupei met on big screen with nine experts from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), UCSF Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center and Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and had a 1.5 hour discussion. Details of the case had been uploaded to the hospital’s consultation platform beforehand to give foreign experts a full understanding. This was a young patient with giant retroperitonealtumor who was transferred to PUMCH after a physical check. Experts from the two sides communicated smoothly, and the American experts praised the 3D reconstruction model. After a hot discussion the experts decided on the diagnosis, surgery and after-surgery plans. After the consultation the hospital informed immediately the patient’s family of the results and next-step arrangements.
International distance consultation is a service of the hospital’s Health Management Department approved in October 2017. For patients in need, it helps organize distance discussions between PUMCH and world top experts and decided on therapies together. The project has entered into cooperation with America’s MORE Health, Castle Connolly, E-Health Now and Britain’s CIRCLE platforms. The first consultation took place on May 2, 2018 and so far ten of them have been completed, with PUMCH’s medical plans agreed by international colleagues.
The project is based on a HIPPA certificated, efficient and safe platform, which brings world-class medical opinions to patients without their going abroad, and foreign doctors can also include a patient into clinical trial of a new drug. If necessary, it also helps with two-way international referral and helps a patient quickly locate the right doctor abroad.
