(By Peng Junya, Guo Jing) The afternoon of September 9 saw the final review of key project applications of 2016 young researchers’ foundation at the multi-function hall, 4th floor of the medicine building of the hospital. 35 young researchers performed five-minute final defense in English and, after fierce competition, 20 won out to receive support from the foundation. This marked the completion of the review task this year.
Applications from researchers aged under 45 started in last April. Applications were lodged for a total of 276 projects and 190 of them entered the review stage. At an English defense meeting on July 21, the expert panel selected out 28 regular projects, 5 projects for public health and soft science for support, as well as 35 key projects for final review.
Member s of the final review jury from inside PUMCHincluded: President Zhao Yupei, Vice Presidents Wang Yipeng and Zhang Shuyang, Professor Shen Keng from the hospital’s scientific research committee, some department chiefs, specially invited researchers and CTSI participants. Members from outside the hospital were: experts from fellow institutions including AcademicianQiangBoqin, Academician Shen Yan, foreign experts, PUMC graduates and CMB members. The jury assessed the applications from their being innovative, scientific and practical. After listening to opinions from the expert panel and carrying out discussions with the hospital leadership, it is decided that 10 more projects will be allowed to add to the total number of key projects to 20. The total fund will be 6 million yuan to support 53 young researchers.
Based on 2013 experience, the 2016 review featured optimized procedures. Compared with various foundations from outside the hospital, this in-house foundation serves more as an incubator of studies led by young researchers. Under great support from the hospital leadership, the foundation provides stable guarantee for researches at earlystage and paves way for applications for provincial and national foundations.
