The afternoon of May 18 saw the staging of the hospital’s first popular science speech contest under the theme “PUMCH: acting towards a healthier China”. 20 young medical workers, divided into four teams named “All Powerful”, “Science Communication Frenzy”, “Chrysanthemum” and “Adventurers” competed for medals.

The contest was in five rounds. In each round, each team sent out a member for a five-minute speech and a one-minute question answering. “Doctor, will a public toilet transmit venereal diseases? Are towels in a hotel clean?” “Take care of your ‘chrysanthemum’, start from blood in your stool.” “What shall we do when death falls?” Doctors, nurses and medical students, drawing from their daily clinical work and using their department advantage, gave speech on many original and practical topics of medical science communication.

The three-hour-and-half contest held audience attention with its excellence and intensity. People were kept nervous and excited by tutors’ comments, spontaneous voting by a 300-people jury and real-time display of individual and team scores on the big screen. Finally, ““Adventurers” stood out to win the gold medal, “Chrysanthemum” got silver and the other two teams received the bronze medal. President Zhao Yupei, Party Secretary Jiang Yuxin, Counsel Wang Huaning from the Publicity Department of the National Health and Family Planning Commission and Vice Director Huang Zemin from China Association of Health Promotion and Education presented the medals.

The contest is an important effort of the hospital to mark the 95th founding anniversary of CPC, the 95th founding anniversary of PUMCH, as well as an action in response to the “healthy China” national strategy.
