As one of China’s first-batch demonstrative bases for standardized residency education, PUMCH has been looking for new possibilities of training clinical medicine personnel. In 2015, the hospital worked together with CMB to hold the International Forum on Residency Education, took the lead in establishing China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals for Residency Education, so as to build a residency education system that adopts international standards and at the same time caters to domestic needs.
In 2016, based on strengthened residency training, the hospital’s post-doctoral program of clinical medicine, carried out together with CAMS and PUMC, was approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and will start to recruit across China this year. Tang Tao, deputy director of the Ministry, paid an inspection tour to the hospital, to again speed up the hospital’s efforts in high-level medical personnel training and the building of teacher teams.
With its post-doctoral mobile station established in the 1990s, the hospital has gathered rich experience in the education and management of post-doctoral students. The newly established program, based on the state’s post-doctoral policies and management and sticking to the principle of “strict enrollment and graduation, excellent teaching”, will select each year students from eight-year clinical medicine graduates and doctoral graduates, to complete in the hospital intensive training combining medicine, teaching and research, with the aim of turning out for China multidisciplinary talents with international vision.
Unlike traditional post-doctoral programs that focus more on scientific research, the hospital’s program is an “upgraded” version of residency education. It focuses on clinical training and also takes care of clinical teaching and research. The time is three years.
Once entering the station, a student will receive world-class residency education. A surgeon will have more opportunities for operations and a non-surgeon will receive a higher-stage training for clinical diagnosis and treatment.
A post-doctoral student at PUMCH will enjoy the same salary and benefits with that of a resident of the same qualifications of the hospital, as well as state-prescribed subsidy for post-doctoral students. The hospital will also provide apartments that comply with state post-doctoral standards, a fitness center that covers an area of 820 square meters and seven dining halls with different specialties. All these facilities are meant to serve the students’ study and work here.
