August 26, 2014 saw a special handover ceremony at the “Baby Club” of the department of paediatrics, PUMCH. A French mother donated an oxygen generator and a pulse oximeter her premature daughter once used to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital.

Little Linda (alias),  a 26-weeker, was born 14 weeks early weighting only 990 grams. After spending 64 days and nights in the NICU at PUMCHand receiving regular follow-up visits in the following three years, she had a satisfactory growth and development without showing any noticeable difference with children at the same age. Linda’s mother contacted PUMCH voluntarily and hoped to donate the two devices used by Linda shortly after she was discharged from the hospital. “Perhaps another child like Linda needs them after being discharged,” she said.

For more than a decade, the department of paediatrics has successfully treated hundreds of preterm infants born at less than 1,500g. Their parents are mainly from Beijing and surrounding areas, and some are foreigners from Russia, Ireland and Congo. The first batch of them is now teenagers with good mental and physical conditions.
