On May 6, 2014, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome visited patients in Arletta Hospital, Addis Ababa, who benefited from a project of free cataract surgeries by Chinese doctors.
After the Spring Festival, PUMCH was assigned the task by the National Health and Family Planning Commission and immediately set up a team of six, led by Professor Dong Fangtian from the Department of Ophthlmology and consisting of three other doctors and two nurses. In nine days they performed more than 200 cataract surgeries in the Ethiopian hospital, 90% of patients being at mature and hyper-mature stages. The hospital director highly praised the skills and devotion of the Chinese medical staff, and thanked them for the blessing they brought to local patients.
Premier Li also praised them for bringing love and light to Africa.
