On August 24-26, the 2018 PUMCH Skin Image Diagnosis Class & Shuaifuyuan 1 Skin Image Summit Forum was held in Beijing. It was hosted by the Department of Dermatology, PUMCH and supported by Huaxia Skin Image and Artificial Intelligence Cooperation (HSIAIC). Nearly 300 participants from across the country studied latest theories of skin imaging, experienced the thrill of a man-machine war and took part in the 1st Huaxia Cup Dermoscopy Competition. HSIAIC also entered formal strategic cooperation with Skin Disease Artificial Intelligence Development Alliance.

An academic feast of skin imaging

The Skin Image Diagnosis Class opened on August 24. Skin imaging is a relatively new academic system in China. At the class both basic and advanced lectures were offered. Professor Jin Hongzhong from PUMCH gave a welcoming speech and a lecture on the “Importance of Skin Image AI Development”. Associate Professor Liu Jie lectured on basic theories of dermoscopy, images of squamous cell carcinoma, the International Dermoscopy Society (IDS) and the consensus on inflammatory skin diseases it published. Professor Liu Yuehua gave a lecture on “Relations between Dermoscopic Structure and Histopathology”. Doctors Zhu Chenyu, Shu Chang and Wang Shiqi lectured on dermoscopic representations of various benign and malignant skin diseases. Professor Zhu Qingli gave a lecture on “Application of HFUS in Dermatology: Perspective and Challenge”.

AI strategic cooperation

August 26 saw the opening of Shuaifuyuan 1 Skin Image Summit Forum. Present at the Summit were: Professor Lu Qianjin, chairman of Chinese Society of Dermatology, Chinese Medical Association and director of Department of Dermatology, the 2nd Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, Professor Jin Hongzhong, director of Department of Dermatology, PUMCH, Professor Paola Pasquali, president of International Society of Teledermatology, Professor Ran Yuping with Department of Dermatology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Professor Cui Yong, director of Department of Dermatology, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, and Mr. Zhang Wei, vice president of dxy.cn. Associate Professor Liu jie with Department of Dermatology, PUMCH gave an opening speech.

The Forum started with a signing ceremony of a strategic cooperation. Two teams in China that go deep into skin diseases and AI--HSIAIC and Skin Disease Artificial Intelligence Development Alliance--will join efforts to build an efficient and convenient platform that supports diagnosis and to promote AI application in skin disease treatment. They will quickly build up infrastructure supporting dermoscopic representations and launch clinical applications. They will integrate functions through the “intelligent skin” platform and build a dermatology curriculum system, supportive diagnosis system and support system across the country.

After the ceremony, Professor Paola Pasquali, based on her experience in Spain, gave lectures on “Teledermatology and Carcinoma” and “Standardized Medical Photography”. Associate Professor Liu Jie shared her thoughts from the 5th World Congress of Dermoscopy.

Man-machine war, dermoscopy competition

The class featured a man-machine war on August 25. Participants challenged a medical robot developed by Beihang University and checked what they had learned in the past two days.

Participants were asked to give diagnosis on 135 dermoscopic images within 60 minutes. Professor Paola Pasquali also took part. The highest score was 130, made in less than 10 minutes. Then, everyone witnessed the robot make correct diagnosis on 117 images using its complicated algorithm, spending only 0.52 second.

Following was the 1st Huaxia Cup Dermoscopy Competition. The final winner was the team of the First Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of Zhejiang University.
