CAS, PUMCH Sign Strategic Cooperation Agreement

On the morning of August 20, 2018, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) signed in Beijing a strategic cooperation agreement on the joint establishment of a Health Sciences Research Center. National Health Commission Director Ma Xiaowei, CAS President Bai Chunli, PUMCH President Zhao Yupei, CAS Vice President Zhang Yaping attended the signing and inauguration ceremony. Bai and Zhao signed the agreement on behalf of the two parties.

The agreement marked a milestone in the life and health fields. It is a joint-hands between China’s top research and clinical institutes to build a state-class research platform and demonstrative institution for translational medicine, so as to explore into new healthcare and research modes in the future. It is an important step of the two institutions to implement the strategy of the CPC 19th National Congress, that is, to build an innovative and scientifically strong country and further enhance healthcare in the country.

The ceremony was chaired by PUMCH Party Secretary Jiang Yuxin. President Bai and President Zhao spoke about the principle, goal and content of the cooperation, Director Ma expressed best wishes and expectations for the cooperation.

Today’s world is witnessing a new round of technological reforms. Breakthrough in a large batch of technologies--stem cell and regenerative medicine, immunotherapy and medical big data--provided new opportunities for disease prevention and treatment, healthcare and the medical industry. The Research Center will focus on health maintenance and promotion and research into the prevention, early screening, early diagnosis and new therapies of major diseases. Here, basic research will be driven by clinical needs, and new methods in basic research will in turn provide new perspectives and means for clinical practice. Here efforts will be joined in health sciences projects, translational medicine research platform, original sci-tech infrastructure construction of the state, future-faced research-based hospital construction, personnel training in translational medicine and staff exchange between the two institutions.

After the ceremony, Academician Zhou Qi, director of Institute of Zoology, CAS, gave an academic report on the progress and future of stem cell and regenerative medicine.
